NYC opens cooling centers in air-conditioned, public facilities during extreme heat events to help prevent heat-related illnesses or deaths. NYC will specifically open the centers when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory with a forecasted heat index of 95 degrees or higher for two or more days or 100 degrees for any period.
As we've experienced intense heat over the last couple of days, cooling centers have opened their doors to the public. The closest and consistently open cooling center to Hamilton Terrace is the Hamilton Grange Library, located at 503 West 145th Street.
Check this website daily to find an open cooling center. Some accept pets. Rules and policies vary by location. Cooling centers can also be found by calling 311 (VRS: 212-639-9675 or TTY: 212-504-4115).
Call 911 if you or someone you know has these symptoms of heat illness:
Heavy sweating
Muscle cramps
Light headedness, feeling faint
Headache
Decreased energy
Loss of appetite, nausea
