As we hear more and more about overdose-related deaths in our city and neighborhood, we want to remind neighbors of an important overdose prevention resource that's available to all New Yorkers for free: Naloxone.
Naloxone, or Narcan, is a safe medication that can save someone’s life by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose. It only works on opioids, such as heroin, prescription painkillers and fentanyl, but it is safe to use even if opioids are not present.
The City's Department of Health provides free Naloxone and, during COVID-19, free virtual trainings on how to use Naloxone. The virtual training is one (1) hour and covers the steps for responding to an opioid overdose with naloxone. The training also outlines options for accessing an Overdose Response Kit in person or by mail.
You can find more information and register for an upcoming training here: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/health/health-topics/naloxone.page
You can also request a free “Emergency Overdose Rescue Kit” at a pharmacy participating in the NYC Emergency Overdose Rescue Kit Program. The closest participating pharmacy to our neighborhood is the CVS Pharmacy at 115 W. 125th Street.
