Honoring April G. Tyler

On Tuesday, February 16th 2021 tragedy befell our community with the unexpected passing of our friend and warrior for West Harlem and all of New York City, April G. Tyler.

April was a devoted mother, daughter, community member and activist, local political leader, advocate for affordable housing, yoga enthusiast and a proud African-American woman who fought tirelessly for what she believed in while inspiring others to do so as well.

April’s knowledge of the issues facing West Harlem and her decades long relationships with elected officials and the public and private sector made her an undisputed leader in the fight for affordable housing and, in particular, affordable ownership, creating generational wealth for low income and black families in New York for years to come. She was not content to simply react and defeat bad policies and legislature, but was working to develop alternative legislative framework, based on community input, to ensure affordable housing and equal justice and treatment for all.

In short, April will be dearly missed by all her family and friends of the community. West Harlem and NYC will feel the void for years to come.

Signe Mortenson has organized a gofundme fundraiser on behalf of April’s family and all funds raised will go directly to Sylvia Tyler, April’s mother, who will be in charge of final expenses.

There will be immediate needs for cost of burial and services and more funds will be needed for a memorial fund and inevitable celebration of life with the entire community once we can all hug each other in person again -just like April would have wanted! Rest assured you will be invited to celebrate with us all!
