There are new "smart" composting bins popping up around the neighborhood.
The sealed bins are located on publicly accessible streets and may be opened via a smartphone app called NYC Compost. Folks can then put their compost into the bins. These bins are available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week and will help reduce the amount of food scraps sent to landfills. Bins will be emptied on a regular basis, and the scraps will be composted to beautify green spaces across the city.

When you're near a smart compost bin, you will see the following screen on the app. This screen shows how far the bin is from the user, and whether the bin is available for compost drop-off or not.
