Hamilton Terrace Block Association (HTBA) mourns the passing of longtime resident of 53 Hamilton Terrace, Asfaha Hadera. He passed on February 17, 2025.
Asfaha is a deeply respected neighbor and leader of the African diaspora community in New York. He was an Ethipoian refugee who started the African Services Committee in 1981, a local nonprofit organization that provides health, housing, legal support, social welfare, education, nutrition, and advocacy services to more than 8,000 people a year in New York City. Asfaha was also an Executive Committee Member of the The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Asfaha dedicated his life to serving the needs of others, which he was recognized for throughout his life. He is a 2004 winner of the Emigrant Foundation Award and recipient of the 2005 Ronald Reagan Gold Medal. He has been recognized by the Congressional Black Caucus and received a proclamation from the New York City Council for outstanding service to the community.
The HTBA board gives its condolences to his wife and their daughter. May Asfaha's memory be a blessing.
